This is what you need to know about celebrating an anniversary in education.
If you achieve an anniversary in primary, secondary, vocational or higher professional education, you will receive a bonus. This is laid down in the collective labor agreement and therefore applies to all employees. “For 25 years of service, this amounts to half a gross monthly salary plus holiday allowance. At the age of 40 or 50, jubilees receive a full gross monthly salary.” Do you work at a university? Then look at the regulations of your institution. In this sector, the collective labor agreement states that employees are entitled to a bonus for a service anniversary and universities make further agreements about this themselves.
“There is often confusion about this,” says Klerk. The years of service with an educational employer count in primary, secondary, vocational and higher professional education. “The confusion arises because employees are told by their manager that they have to make an ABP printout. The employer regularly speaks of 'retirement years', but that is not what is stated in the collective labor agreements. Although I admit: sometimes it is complicatedly written. An ABP printout is therefore more of a 'handle', but not leading. After all, it only shows the retirement years, while previously you only accrued pension from the age of 25. This is important for those who will soon have completed 40 or 50 years of service. The previous years - which are not included in the ABP overview - must be counted towards the official anniversary. There may also be employees who previously had separate contracts and were therefore not directly affiliated with ABP, even though they worked in education.”
Klerk: “It is crystal clear in the collective labor agreements for secondary education and vocational education. Service time means all the time spent in education. This could be at a primary school or a vocational institution. All years in other educational sectors count.” The same applies to higher professional education and primary education. “Although it is written in a cumbersome manner in the latter collective labor agreement.”
In addition to a bonus, you often also receive a day off as a gift for an official anniversary. In secondary education, intermediate vocational education and higher professional education, the anniversary is mentioned with the leave. “This is not literally mentioned in the collective labor agreement, but you could add it to article 8.6 in combination with 8.7 and get a half day or day off due to 'special circumstances'.”
“Unfortunately true, but we see that it is better to discuss this with HR in time so that the moment itself remains festive,” says Klerk. “There is administration involved, especially when it comes to anniversaries of 40 or 50 years where multiple 'documents of evidence' are required.”
