New idea: teacher and gym teacher at the same time
More men in the classroom, more women in the gym: the Hogeschool van Arnhem and Nijmegen will train students to become masters and teachers who are also gym teachers.

The university of applied sciences will start training to become a gym teacher (alo) to combine with primary school teacher training (pabo), so that students obtain two diplomas at the end of the journey. The new process will take five years.
The hope is that more boys will opt for the teacher training college and more girls for the alo. “It is one of the ideas to increase the diversity in our courses”, says teacher training director Karin van Weegen. “Diversity is not just about boys and girls. For example, we also have few immigrant students and few students with an artistic background. ”
Need
According to Van Weegen, there is a great need for the new process, both among employers and students. “We see many PE teachers in our part-time training who are still going to follow the teacher training college. These graduates with two diplomas are also interesting for schools: they can work as subject teachers, but also as regular teachers. ”
HAN wants to merge the two courses for these students: once the didactics course, for example, and an internship that is suitable for both courses. The university of applied sciences expects to start with a group of thirty students in September.
Athletic
The new process is not for everyone, warns the university of applied sciences. Students must meet the entrance requirements for the teacher training college and also be athletic enough to become a gym teacher.
For the past two years, stricter entry requirements have been set for teacher training colleges. As a result, the number of students has dropped drastically. At the same time, primary schools are already feeling the shortage of teachers. The courses do their best to find new target groups. The academic teacher training college, in which students simultaneously obtain a higher vocational education and a university degree, is also an example of this.
