Mini growth teacher training college does not solve teacher shortages
Full-time teacher training courses in the Netherlands are growing by 2 percent this year. A total of 91 young people started to do teacher training more than last school year. A drop in the ocean, given that the forecast teacher shortage in four years - when this group graduates - will amount to more than 4000 full-time jobs.
On average, the number of first-years at universities of applied sciences is growing by 6 percent. Previous research into the preferences of first-year students shows that care and education programs compete with each other. In the 2017-2018 school year, healthcare was the winner with an increase in intake of 9 percent.
Fall in market share
The market share of the teacher training college among first-year students is declining slightly. With the modest growth of 2 percent, the total number of freshmen is just above 4300. That is still far below the numbers recorded four years ago: around 5700 freshmen. At the time, the PABO had a market share of 6 percent, now it is 4,6 percent. This decrease was mainly caused by stricter admission requirements.
More men
The male-female distribution is striking about the latest PABO enrollment figures. 2017 more men registered for 2018-139 than last school year. The number of women fell by 48. On balance, the proportion of boys rose from 19 to 22 percent.
It is especially the teacher training colleges in the Randstad - where there is the greatest teacher shortage - who score a plus. Together the teacher training colleges in Utrecht, North and South Holland score a growth of 4 percent. The universities of applied sciences in Utrecht, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the iPabo in particular are able to attract more students. In The Hague, the number of first-years is declining. The Hague and Inholland are in min.

Part time is growing
The part-time teacher training courses produce fewer teachers, but are growing faster. With 122 more part-timers, these courses grew by 30 percent to 526 registrations this school year. There are also more people transferring from higher vocational education to teacher training college. It is not known how many switchers there are from the teacher training college to other studies.
Mega class
