I read everywhere that the new pension system is coming. I don't have a clear picture of that yet. Defends the AOb also the interests of the members in the introduction of the new system?

Certainly! To give a concrete example: the AOb has succeeded in ensuring that, after the introduction of the new scheme, the employer continues to pay the same pension premium as now. Many employers prefer a lower premium so that they can increase salaries with those savings. They see this as an opportunity to improve their competitive position. Suppose, for example, that as an employer you want to hire a car technology teacher, then you have to compete with the car industry. It may pay better, while ABP offers a higher pension. But hardly anyone asks about the pension scheme when applying for a job, especially young people. As a trade union, the AOb to the longer term and then pension is simply very important.
One of the other results where the AOb is pleased with the fact that the new scheme improves the survivor's pension in the event of disability.
Currently, in that situation you accrue 50 percent pension and your partner will only receive half of the survivor's pension after your death. “That means a very heavy drop in income,” he said AObpolicy officer Roelf van der Ploeg. “We thought that was an ugly blemish in the current arrangement. Fortunately, that is now being repaired. Under the new scheme, your partner will also receive a survivor's pension on 100 percent of your salary in these circumstances. This has helped quite a group.”

At the controls yourself
A quick word about the relationship between the union and the ABP. The pension fund is the operator of the pension scheme that the social partners have agreed with each other, i.e. the employees and the employers. So they are at the controls themselves. How this is formally arranged: the so-called Pension Chamber contains representatives of the employers and the various trade unions. On behalf of the AOb it is Roelf van der Ploeg, from FNV Overheid it is Yoram Bovenkerk. The Pension Chamber negotiates on matters such as the amount of the premium and which indexation of the pensions will be used. The ABP board will ensure implementation, if it is financially feasible.
The approach was different when designing the new pension scheme. The Pension Chamber has chosen to work together from the start and sometimes engage in tough negotiations with the ABP board, to ensure that the complicated process runs as smoothly as possible. It came at the end of December result in broad terms outwards.
By the way, the AObmembers themselves have a delegation in the Accountability Body, which can be compared to the participation council at school. The members are elected and for the AOb there are three working people and two retirees. They monitor the ABP board and provide advice. A good example is their request to invest more in the construction of affordable rental housing, because the shortage is also felt by many educators. The ABP indeed decided to do so in the autumn.
When?
As of January 1, 2027, the ABP pension fund will switch to the new pension scheme.
And then?
In April and May the AOb meetings for members in five regions to discuss the new arrangement. There will also be a webinar on this topic.
