Agreements about treating each other with respect ensure a safe atmosphere.
Be aware of your own views and use of words. Dare to be vulnerable and don't join in with inappropriate comments or jokes.
Students often imitate their surroundings. By sharing experiences, for example on the basis of a video, they can form their own opinion.
Point out to the student the effect of a particular remark and the boundary it crosses. Then try to discover how he or she arrives at this opinion.
Sometimes comments can touch you emotionally, that's completely normal and not bad. Take a moment to relax before you start the conversation about what's going on. Anger, for example, often arises from the feeling that one's own values and norms are being attacked.
