'Maintain professional status for teachers'
The professional status, which defines the teacher's professional space, should not be deleted. Seven organizations write that - including the AOb, CNV Education, the Teachers' Collective and Teachers in Action - in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The House will debate next week about the abolition of the teachers' register. In this register, teachers would keep their diplomas and further training to show that they meet the requirements for the teaching profession. The register has garnered a lot of criticism, right from its introduction by the - now defunct - Education Cooperative. The register came never really wide off the ground, and will most likely be abolished.

However, this abolition also threatens to delete the provisions on the professional status. And the seven organizations are against that. "The teacher has a central role in education," says AObchairman Tamar van Gelder. "In practice, a teacher can only fulfill that role if he or she has sufficient say over his or her education."

In the professional statute, therefore, agreements are made about respecting the professional space of the teacher. It regulates the say of teachers over the content of the curriculum, the resources used, how the curriculum is offered and, for example, the pedagogical-didactic approach.

To ensure that a teacher actually has sufficient professional space, the law prescribes that every school or institution must have a professional status. “The abolition of this provision makes the teacher dependent on other parties to be able to practice his profession properly,” says Van Gelder. "We therefore call on the House of Representatives to enforce the provisions concerning the professional status. ”
