Information & advice: plan parental leave well in advance

Parental leave is a right that is regulated for employees in the Work and Care Act. In short, it means that you can take parental leave for that child until the eighth birthday of your child. Perhaps unnecessarily: the right to parental leave applies per child, so with twins you have two separate rights to parental leave. Depending on your collective labor agreement, additions may apply to this right with regard to the extent of the leave and partial continued payment during the leave.
Additional provisions on paid parental leave have been included in almost all educational collective agreements. This is not the case in the collective labor agreement for higher professional education, but this collective labor agreement does offer universities of applied sciences the opportunity to lay down agreements at institutional level. If you work in higher professional education, you can request these schemes via the works council, employee participation council or personnel department.
Refund policy
If you want to take paid parental leave, it is wise to plan well in advance. If you intend to work less or even resign after your parental leave has ended, you will probably have a repayment obligation on the part of your parental leave paid. There is often a time limit attached to this. After the expiry of this term, the repayment obligation lapses.
