Parental contributions are increasingly important
With a parental contribution, a small group of schools receive an average of 10 percent in income on top of the government contribution. Parents who want smaller classes have to pay.

'In recent years, the government has cut back enormously on education', and that is why a general special school requires a voluntary parental contribution of more than a thousand euros for the specialist teachers and small classes. Another calls on parents to voluntarily transfer three thousand euros if they want to make use of gifted education in very small groups.
They stood out the lump sum study: the schools that spend a lot more on staff. This mainly concerns school associations, private schools and schools with a special pedagogical approach. They want more, and they ask the parents for it. And there is an increase in it. According to the annual accounts, income from parental contributions grew by 2012 percent between 2016 and 30, from EUR 67 million to EUR 87 million.

There is some pollution in that: there are international schools where tuition fees are more likely. There are schools that count the living expenses as a parental contribution. There are schools that have also included the pricey out-of-school care. But what's left is one clear trend: parental contributions are becoming increasingly important in general special and private schools.
The differences per school board are large. The parental contribution at most schools is a few tens, on average only 1 percent of the government contribution. In the leading group it is 10 to 30 percent. Sometimes it is a fixed amount, sometimes an amount according to income. For the leading group of 82 boards, this involves 26 million euros.
