VSO exam candidates are given more time to obtain a diploma
Exam candidates in special secondary education (VSO) are allowed to start further education after the summer holidays if they have not yet completed their exams. They will have a fourth resit opportunity and until the end of this year to obtain their diploma. Minister of Education Slob made these promises this afternoon during an emergency debate in the House of Representatives.

This has finally put an end to the lack of clarity for VSO students. Two weeks ago, many parties appeared in the House of Representatives critical about the decision to maintain the state exams in VSO. They fear that due to the school closure, students have not been able to properly prepare for the college exams, part of the state exams, which are on the roll from the end of this month.

Last week nam a large majority of them favor a motion by coalition parties D66 and CDA to certify students on the basis of school results achieved. A day later, Minister Slob indicated that he would not implement the motion, because the value of the diploma would then not be guaranteed.
Allowance
During the debate, D66 and CDA let go of their motion, but asked for extra options to accommodate exam candidates. They drew a comparison with the way in which a solution was found for students of Vmbo Maastricht without compromising diploma quality. In this way there was room for a way out of the impasse with the minister.
Slob came up with the promise that VSO exam candidates will be able to get an extra resit opportunity in the autumn. In anticipation of their certification, they can already start with a follow-up study.
