Every child a qualified teacher in 2030 – sign the manifesto!
Every child must be taught by a qualified teacher by the year 2030. The Dutch government must commit itself to this. That's what the AOb, Parents & Education and Defense for Children.
De AOb, Parents & Education and Defense for Children demand from government:
- Commit to the year 2030 as the deadline that every child has a qualified teacher
- Make it clear how big the problem is now. How many children do not have a qualified teacher?
- Then define checkpoints. How much less should the deficit be in 2025? And make sure that the deficit goes to zero in 2030.
- Take effective measures and explain how they contribute to reducing the teacher shortage.
- Report every year with hard figures on how this objective is progressing, and how measures contribute to achieving the end result.
Competent
Every child has the right to a good education AOb, Parents & Education and Defense for Children. 'And a qualified teacher for the classroom is essential for this.' However, due to the teacher shortage, thousands of students currently do not have a qualified teacher.
“In the region of The Hague, some schools have already been forced to switch to a four-day school week,” says AObdirector Thijs Roovers. “And I hear from colleagues that crash classes with more than 35 students are becoming the norm rather than the exception. This is seriously detrimental to the quality of education. And so of the children.”
Inadequate
A quarter of 15-year-old students cannot read enough to be able to participate in society. “All signals are on red for education in the Netherlands,” says Lobke Vlaming, director of Parents & Education. “If nothing is done now, the teacher shortage will only increase in the coming years.”
Children's rights
That is no longer possible. “By signing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Dutch government has committed itself to the rights of the child,” says Defense for Children director Mirjam Blaak. “In doing so, the government recognizes that every child has the right to education and to the fullest possible development of his personality, talents and mental and physical abilities. We think it is high time that the government adheres to these children's rights and commits that by 2030 every child has a qualified teacher.”
Responsible
“The government is responsible, but we need everyone to tackle this major problem,” says Roovers van de AOb. “The politicians, the employers and us: parents, children, the children's rights organization and the people who work in education. Of course we are willing to help and participate.”
