Salary in education

Are you considering a job in education or are you already applying? Then you want to know exactly how much you will receive on your account. Your starting salary depends on the sector in which you work and on the pay scale in which you end up. We explain how this works.

Explanation of wage scales in education

There are several pay scales in every education sector. A pay scale is divided into 'steps'. Normally, your salary will increase by one step each year, until you have reached the maximum of your salary scale. In order to know what you will earn net later, you need to know what your pay scale is.

  • Pay scale starter primary education: As a starter in primary education you start in scale LB.
  • Pay scale for starters in secondary education and mbo: As a starter in secondary education and MBO you usually start in scale LB. For a more demanding position - in curriculum development or supervising students with complex problems - in secondary education you will end up in scale LC.
  • Pay scale starter hbo: HBO works with salary scales 10 to 13. The salary scale you end up in depends on your experience, your education and the subject you teach.

When you see a vacancy or negotiate about your salary, it is always about your gross salary. If you want to know how that net works out, use the handy Salary check of AOb.

Gross vs. net

The net amount that you ultimately receive on your account is lower than your gross salary. Taxes and employee premiums are deducted from this.

The difference between gross and net therefore exists because your employer pays money for you to the Tax and Customs Administration, social insurance and to the pension fund. You are therefore entitled to a benefit if you ever become disabled or unemployed. The money in the pension fund is yours, but you cannot access it yet.
