Employment conditions for education

If you start in education, you will of course also want to know what your employment conditions will be. For example, what about your vacation days, days off and the travel allowance? All these agreements are laid down in a collective labor agreement: the collective labor agreement.

Each education sector has its own collective labor agreement

De AOb negotiates with employers about salary and working conditions in education. We do this for every education sector. Go to the CLA page en scroll by the collective labor agreement of your education sector. It may feel a bit like criminal work, but this will help you a lot in the negotiations. As a starter, especially read the chapters on salary scale, extra increments, special rewards and allowances.

Extra appointments for starters

Separate agreements are usually made for starters like you. For example, you are entitled to extra guidance and there is a special budget to relieve the workload. In primary education, starters and lateral entrants, for example, receive an extra 40 hours to ease their workload. You will find this agreement in the collective labor agreement under the name 'special sustainability budget'. Are you going to work at a secondary school? Then as a starter you will receive a reduction of the teaching task. In the first year there will be a 20 percent reduction in task policy, in the second year it will be 10 percent.

Study days and study budget

Even if you're hired soon, you're not done learning. As a teacher, you must of course keep up and keep your knowledge up-to-date. The time you spend on courses, workshops and training will be reimbursed. There is also a training budget for all teachers and support staff. Here too, the agreements differ per sector. Check all the details in your collective labor agreement.

  • In the primary education receive all employees two hours per week at a full-time professional development position. This time is separate from team training and can also be saved for entire training days. 500 euros per full-time job is available per person for individual training.
  • As a teacher at a high school you are entitled to at least 83 clock hours. You can decide for yourself how those hours are used. Both teachers and education support staff receive a budget of 500 euros per year for training. Education support staff are entitled to at least forty clock hours. Dedicated training by the employer is fully reimbursed in time and money.
  • Who works in one MBO class is entitled to 59 hours of professional development and can derive rights from the training budget or plan of the education team. The employer must reimburse all costs incurred by the employee if this has been ordered. The employer must also provide study leave for up to three quarters of the study load of the course or programme. When it comes to a request from the employee that is in the interest of the institution, 50 to 75 percent of the study costs will be reimbursed. Study leave then depends on 'the interests of the institution' and amounts to a maximum of one day per week.
  • Do you work on one University? Do you have an employment contract of 0,4 FTE or more? Then you are entitled to forty hours a year to work on your ability. Employees with a smaller employment contract get fewer hours. Employers must ensure that these hours are exempt from the annual work.
  • Employees at universities are given at least two development days per year to work on sustainable employability. These days can also be saved. NB! Make a written agreement about this, otherwise the unused days will expire at the end of the calendar year.

Before you sign a contract

We have a teacher shortage in the Netherlands. Although this is a big problem, as a starter it sometimes helps you negotiate the terms of employment. If a school is eager to have you, there may be room to negotiate. Perhaps you can enter a higher salary scale or there is talk of a higher travel allowance.

What type of contract are you going to sign?

It is wise to read carefully before signing. Not only because of the working conditions. Because temporary contracts in particular come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes you will not even be employed by the school itself, but by a payroll organization. That sometimes has its advantages. But there are also disadvantages. This article lists all the pros and cons.

Special leave for special events

Education is good during the holidays. You are also entitled to leave in special situations. Such as the birth of a child or a move.

Lios

During an internship you are officially a teacher in training (a trainee teacher). Learning and earning your credits are of course the most important things in this phase. But you are no longer a student doing assignments. You become part of a team. That is why clear agreements are very important. If you know what is expected of you, you can work purposefully.

Make agreements about what you will be assessed on, the planning of your tasks and the evaluation of your internship. Also agree when you need to be present for parents' evenings and meetings. And it must be clear what your role is. For example, are you allowed to give parents advice about help with homework? Will you also vote on agenda items? Also think about agreements about the way you work and the way you perform your duties. Can your supervisor just walk into the classroom or if you take over a lesson, will you have enough time to prepare it?

Put it in an email. Especially if you're just starting out somewhere, it can be difficult to ask for so much. You don't want to come across as demanding. But try to get all agreements clear before you start. And record the agreements in writing. Clarity is always nice, and it can prevent unpleasant situations.
