In mid-July, the Amsterdam school board Asko received a letter from DUO, the body that provides the subsidy for lateral entrants on behalf of the Ministry of Education: the application for the side-entry subsidy has been put 'on hold'. “This has unpleasant consequences. I hope the ministry will find a solution soon ”, says Marianne van Schijndel of Asko.
Because there are now twenty brand new teachers and masters at work as side entrants at the Amsterdam Asko schools. Another five will start this month. They follow a work-learning path: they start directly in front of the class and are trained at the same time. The costs for the training, supervision and suitability assessment - which the side entrants had to do beforehand - are covered by the subsidy side intake. This is good for 20.000 euros per person.

The ministry's website states that the subsidy money for MBO has already been used up. An extra budget has been made available for the MBO sector for people who want to become a technology teacher. Van Schijndel of the Amsterdam primary education board does a quick calculation: “If our last five applications are also put on hold, our board will lose more than a ton. Moreover: do you have to tell future candidates that they have to pay for the training course themselves? I don't think people will choose education then. ”

Last year the pot turned out also prematurely leeg and the minister decided after pressure from the House of Representatives supplement the amount. According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, all existing applications will be honored. And schools can continue to submit applications despite the letter.
