Since March 16 schools are closed and will remain so for the next few weeks. Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced this during a press conference tonight. The May holiday officially runs from April 25 to May 3, but many schools schedule their own May holiday, so it differs per region.
The measure will also be extended for catering establishments, museums, hairdressers and nail salons, but until April 28. Rutte especially wants to give clarity to parents and education by at least closing the schools for longer until the May holidays. Stolk calls the cabinet's decision “sensible”.
Whether the schools can actually open again after the May holidays, Rutte could not say. The cabinet will take a new decision on this in the week before 28 April. “I would be surprised if we can say at the end of April that everything is back to normal. We may have to continue at this level," said the prime minister.
