Schools near Zwolle are looking for parents with a pabo diploma

'Since the summer holidays, we have been confronted with a structural shortage of replacement teachers,' writes director Wiersma on Facebook and in the newsletter of the four Primary Christian Education schools in Nieuwleusen. 'Perhaps you know someone with a Pabo diploma or have you followed a Pabo course yourself? We are happy to help you return to education.'

The need is great at his four schools. “The raid pool is empty. And we are in contact with an employment agency that for many years could almost always supply replacements, but since the summer holidays they are no longer able to do that. And we don't always want to put an IB or director in front of the group, because they also have other tasks.”
So his schools now have to send students home. “That is a hard choice, but politicians have been warned long enough. There are simply too few teachers.”

There have been years when PABO graduates were unable to find work. Where have they gone?

Wiersma does suspect that there are people walking around in the villages of his schools who previously obtained a teacher training diploma. “There have been years when PABO graduates could not find work. Where have they gone?” He hopes those former graduates will want to return to education – if only as a substitute.

“Of course, after – say – fifteen years it will be quite a step to stand in front of the classroom again. But we would like to guide the parents in this. We want to offer additional training, for example in the use of IWBs, and they can also join us for days.”

Wiersma has now received one registration. "It's a start. I hope that eventually we will get a list of people we can call in case of an emergency.”
