The classic educational model of one teacher for one class would disappear according to that plan. Many scarce teachers would be given a 'coordinating role' in Amsterdam. “I don't understand how people dare to suggest this,” says Roovers. “If we have a shortage of surgeons, pilots or dentists, are we going to make up for that with people from the arts and the financial world?”

Workload
In this way we know for sure that in a few years there will be no teacher left. While it can also be done differently. “You cannot solve the teacher shortage in one day,” say Van Gelder and Roovers. A long-term plan is needed in which a number of issues are addressed. Such as a lasting good salary, less work pressure and smaller classes.
“We need more new teachers,” says Roovers. “But what does a starter have at the moment when he or she starts in education? A student debt, a full class, no permanent job, too few colleagues and a salary that does not grow in line with inflation. How attractive is that prospect? It is a small miracle that people are still going into education at all.”
Inflation
To increase the number of starters, according to Van Gelder, the student debt of the teacher training courses must be forgiven. Furthermore, starters must be better supervised, they must be helped to find a home and starters must no longer be fobbed off with a temporary job. And, of course, their salary must grow in line with inflation.
We must never accept that entire generations of students will be left out
“The drug is known,” say Van Gelder and Roovers. “It will take time, money and effort – but there is no alternative. Unless we accept that entire generations of students will be left out. And that is not negotiable as far as we are concerned.”
Roovers calls on everyone to resist. “Sign our manifesto: 'Every child a qualified teacher'. And, if possible, come to the demonstration on Friday. This madness must stop.”
