Judge favors failed student

A VWO student at the Revius Lyceum who had lodged an objection with the court against the assessment of her management and organization exams has definitively failed at one tenth point. The school does not have to reassess the student's exam, the Utrecht court ruled last Friday.

To question ten of the exam, the student gave the correct answer last summer, but not the correct calculation. She received the maximum of two points from the first corrector. The second corrector disagrees and gave her zero points for this question. In the meantime, both correctors agree that the student does not earn any points for this question. Both parties used the statutory correction rule in the lawsuit as proof that they are in the same. The student relies on an article that states that score points should be awarded to correct answers that are not in the assessment model. Experts

The student has engaged seven experts to judge that her answer is correct and that her answer should be awarded the full two points, but the judge agrees with the correctors. Based on the answer to the question, it cannot be determined whether the student has the correct understanding and no points need to be awarded for the answer to the question, the judge ruled.

It is not the first time that a school has had to appear in court because of an exam question. In August 2018, a student from the Rientjes Mavo started in Maarssen summary proceedings against his school. He wanted a statement on his maths exam to be checked again by an independent corrector.
