More HBO teachers with a temporary contract
Almost one in six HBO lecturers has a temporary contract, according to new figures from the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences. The AOb wants to limit the 'flexible shell'.

Today, the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences has put new figures online about personnel in higher professional education. The share of teachers with a temporary contract rose slightly from 15 to 16 percent. Among porters, managers and other support staff, the proportion rises from 13 to 15 percent.

However, the temporary employment contracts more often offer the prospect of a permanent job, says a spokesperson for the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences. This used to be 9 percent of temporary contracts, now more than 22 percent. The rest is really flexible.
With permanent work comes a permanent contract
"In the previous HBO collective agreement we have agreed: with permanent work comes a permanent contract”, responds AOb- director Douwe van der Zweep. He thinks it is positive that some of the universities of applied sciences adhere to this rule. But the AOb-driver also sees room for improvement. “Universities of applied sciences that want to keep a flexible shell at all costs, without an identifiable reason such as shrinkage, we will soon discuss this at the collective labor agreement table.”
Because there are still striking differences between the higher professional education institutions. Hogeschool Utrecht is the champion of permanent contracts. Of the fifteen largest universities of applied sciences, Utrecht has the most permanent staff. Only 8 percent of them have an end date in the contract.
Underpayment
The support staff is especially sure of their job at Zuyd Hogeschool, NHL Stenden and Fontys: more than 90 percent have a permanent contract there. In contrast, Leiden University of Applied Sciences has the most teachers with a temporary contract of the large universities of applied sciences: 23 percent. Earlier this year it turned out that the Hogeschool Leiden Many teachers are also underpaid. Almost half of the teaching staff is in scale 10 or lower.

Underpayment and temporary contracts are not necessarily related. Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, for example, also has many teachers with a temporary contract, while that university of applied sciences places almost no teachers in scale 10.
