More first-years in HBO
In September, nearly a hundred thousand students started a higher professional education programme. Compared to last year, the increase is approximately 4,5 percent, the universities of applied sciences estimate.
These are still provisional figures, the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences warns, but the number of applications for HBO courses is 4,5 percent higher than last year. Economics and technology in particular attract more attention.
It could hardly be otherwise, because last academic year far fewer first-years started a higher professional education programme. That was the first academic year in which new students no longer received a basic grant. Then the decline was more than eight percent.
Registrations
Registrations are different from registrations. Some students have registered, but change their mind at the last minute or do not complete the forms on time. So it is only an indication and not a hard number.
To illustrate: of the 127 thousand registrations last year, 94 thousand remained. Now there are almost 136 thousand registrations and it is expected that about 98 thousand will remain.
Pabo
It was already clear that the teacher training colleges are on the rise again. They saw the influx drop significantly last year. This was not only due to the scrapping of the basic grant, but also to stricter admission requirements. The higher professional education institutions now indeed expect an eight to ten percent increase in teacher training in primary education.
