Teachers leave from the four major cities
More primary school teachers are leaving Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht than arriving. In 2017, more than 800 teachers left these cities, while only about 450 teachers arrived from other regions. This is evident from research by Centerdata commissioned by the Labor Market Platform Primary Education.

“It is worrying that especially in the big cities, where there is already a great shortage of teachers, the shortage is growing even further”, says Ton Groot Zwaaftink, chairman of the labor market platform PO. “When teachers leave cities with many labor market problems and too few new teachers return, the school boards are faced with major issues. Then there is no other choice than emergency measures. ”
Job opportunities
The research shows that teachers are more mobile today than they were six years ago. In 2013, 3,9 percent of the total number of teachers in primary education changed schools within their own school board. In 2017, that percentage increased to 4,7.
Salary generally does not increase much when teachers transfer within or outside their boards
The number of teachers transferring to another school board is also rising. Ton Groot Zwaaftink: "The teacher shortage also offers extra job opportunities if you want to gain experience at a school with a different vision, a different approach or a different composition of pupils."
Mobile teachers
Mobile teachers are often young, and men switch schools more often than women. Salary does not seem to be a decisive reason for mobility: salary generally does not increase much when teachers transfer within or outside their administration.
Achterhoek
Almere and the Achterhoek are also faced with more going on than coming teachers. In the Achterhoek, this is probably related to a drop in student numbers. There are also regions where more teachers settle than leave, such as Midden-Gelderland.
