Legal advice: Supplementary insurance is recommended
Jerre is over the moon: after graduating, he immediately finds his first permanent job as a school psychologist at a large school board. He looks at his first pay slip, sees 'IPAP premium' on it and is curious what this means.
IPAP is a voluntary supplementary insurance for incapacity for work in the education sector. In case of illness, Jerre will continue to be paid his employer salary for the first two years. After this, he may receive disability benefit (the wia).
Krater
After two years at the latest, he must earn at least half of the income that he could have earned according to the UWV. If Jerre does not succeed in this, for example because he does not find suitable work or earns too little with it, he will end up in the unfavorable follow-up benefit. That is a low benefit, based on the minimum wage. This so-called wia crater results in a huge income decline, sometimes up to 70 percent of the original income. This can jeopardize other financial obligations (such as mortgage, rent) and you may end up in an already vulnerable moment of the rain.
To ensure
Fortunately, there is an option to insure. On the basis of the recently concluded collective labor agreements in primary and secondary education, every employee must be able to take out insurance for this through the employer. Compared to individual insurance, there are often premium discounts due to scale. Although the costs for additional insurance are for the employee, it is highly advisable to do this. A small monthly amount protects you from very serious income consequences in case of illness.
