'Great responsibility rests on D66's shoulders'
D66 has an expensive duty to make structural investment in education a top priority in the new coalition. The difference in ambition with the largest party is enormous: according to the Central Planning Bureau D66 wants to invest 7,4 billion extra in education, the VVD only wants to 100 million.
"I know that this result means that there is a great responsibility on us, on our party and on me," said party leader Sigrid Kaag during election night. From a sample commissioned by the NOS shows that almost a fifth of the D66 voters come from GroenLinks and the PvdA, two other parties that want a lot in education investing. The VVD and D66 are jointly taking the lead in the exploratory talks to determine which combination of parties could produce a stable majority.
The CDA - a party that VVD leader Mark Rutte would like to work with - belongs, according to the CPB calculations to the parties that want to invest the least in education. During the campaign, the party focused on 1,3 billion in intensifications, of which 500 million for an income-dependent grant and 400 million for an individual lifelong learning training budget when obtaining an MBO diploma. The CDA only allocates 100 million for higher salaries and lower work pressure in primary education.

"We have high expectations of D66. Starting with closing the pay gap between primary and secondary education and a fair salary in all educational sectors. Steps should be taken to ensure smaller class sizes to reduce workload and to ensure that there are a sufficient number of qualified teachers. Also a priority: we want to that the new cabinet will structurally invest an extra 1,1 billion euros in scientific education and research, so that colleagues at the universities can get a permanent contract," said AObdriver Tamar van Gelder.
MPs
Now that the smoke from the political battlefield has almost cleared, this question also deserves an answer: which MPs who have debated education in the past four years will we see again in The Hague?
That certainly applies to VVD members Dennis Wiersma and Rudmer Heerema (who, by the way, mainly campaigned on Twitter about sports), D66 MPs Jan Paternotte and Paul van Meenen, CDA members Harry van der Molen and René Peters, PVV. there Harm Beertema, Lammert van Raan of the Party for the Animals and SP Member of Parliament Peter Kwint.

A number of other education spokespersons can still return to the House of Representatives with preferential votes. This applies to Kwint's colleague Frank Futselaar, who himself has a lower place elected, GroenLinks MPs Lisa Westerveld and Niels van den Berge, Eppo Bruins of the ChristenUnie and Kirsten van den Hul for PvdA member.

In 2017, Westerveld obtained sufficient preferential votes for a place in the House of Representatives. Whether this was successful again this time will become clear when the results are finally determined next week.

Update: Westerveld shares an interim score via Twitter on Friday evening, showing that she has obtained sufficient preferential votes.
