De AOb: 'Abolish the LA salary scale for primary school teachers'
The LA salary scale for teachers working in primary education should disappear. These teachers have a PABO diploma and are therefore certified at HBO level. Nevertheless, they are paid much less well compared to colleagues in secondary education. That should change, says the AOb.
The fact that primary school teachers end up in a lower salary scale has historically grown so much, but today there is no longer any reason for that, according to the AOb. Working in primary education has become more demanding and complicated due to the arrival of appropriate education. Teachers have more to do with pupils with special needs and that requires customization.
According to the OECD, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the low salary discourages men from choosing primary education. It is only a matter of time before this also applies to women. The AOb therefore wants the lowest LA salary scale to disappear and for teachers to move into the higher LB salary scale from the start.
The costs for this operation are 500 million euros.
Big call for education
Some political parties say something about the salary of teachers in a sub-clause of their election manifesto, but no political party makes a specific statement about the abolition of the LA scale. This while there is a great demand from education and certainly with the upcoming teacher shortage it is necessary to make the profession more attractive.
A group of avid elementary school teachers is on Facebook and Twitter started an action under the name 'PO in action.' The AOb sees this action as support for the manifesto presented on February 13: 'Salary step-by-step plan for education' in which the union also argued for a better salary.
