Compliments on a card to improve teacher image
Teacher Gepko Hahn from Corlaer College wants to improve the image of the teaching profession. Yesterday, colleagues of his in Nijmegen handed out cards to passers-by on which they could write a compliment for a teacher who stayed with them. Previously, Hahn was in Utrecht together with his colleagues. "We want to show how great it is to be a teacher."

Why this promotion?
“Together with my more than twenty fellow students, who are also doing the traineeship 'First the Class' follow, we invented the action. I now work as a teacher of social studies and history and I notice that the profession of teacher is not always positive in the news. There are complaints about high work pressure or about difficult students. I get the feeling that people think we are doing something very noble, because we are in front of the class. ”
Isn't that so?
“The traineeship is aimed at linking people from the business world to education. The government hopes that this will lead to more academics in the classroom. I hear that we are sacrificing ourselves, but I don't have that feeling at all. This profession is satisfying. With our actions we want to show that it is good to be a teacher. Despite the fact that you are sometimes busy, such as now with exam time. ”
Is the appreciation too low for teachers?
"From research of the Research Center for Education and the Labor Market shows that the teaching profession has fallen on the career ladder. We also noticed that teachers themselves often think that they receive less appreciation or have a negative self-image. While in reality many people appreciate lecturers, we are now also seeing that with our campaign.”
Oh yeah?
“Yes, many people have a teacher that they remember. They write down the most beautiful memories. For example, one former student wrote that her teacher really had confidence in her. That she experienced it that way. Isn't that nice? ”
What do you do with the cards?
“We will try to send them all to the teachers. We now have over three hundred. We can already send two hundred. We also recorded videos of people complimenting their teacher and students explaining what is special about their teacher. After all, we first have to improve the image of the profession, then hopefully there will be more teachers.”
