Academic education and research

De AOb represents the interests of people working at universities and research institutions. Until January (2020), the VAWO – the trade union for science – did that, but our merger makes us stronger. Together with our representatives at universities, we work on a healthy and safe working environment.

We are first and foremost for our members. Where necessary, we assist them with sound legal advice, we listen to what is going on at universities and research institutes and we listen to what our members consider important.

Policy points

Topics such as social safety, the high pressure to publish, diversity, reducing the high workload, but also the high number of temporary contracts are important to us. There are many more subjects that we are working hard on, such as a different financing model for universities and fair financing of academic education and research.

Nationally, we advocate these subjects with the minister, MPs and of course the employers. We are in firm negotiations with the Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU) for a good collective labor agreement covering these subjects.

At the universities

Take at university or research institution AObrepresentatives participate in the so-called Local Consultation. It includes the Executive Board and representatives of other trade unions. They work together on the implementation of the collective labor agreement and make agreements about local employment conditions. We are proud of our representatives who are passionate about science and their colleagues. You are always welcome to make an appointment with them for a cup of coffee or tea.

And of course we are there for our members. Where necessary, we assist them with sound legal advice. We also like to listen to what our members think is important.
